Gym Floor Re-Sanding
Sanding your Gymnasium Hardwood floor falls in the category of maintenance, but if you have done your yearly maintenance this shouldn’t need to be done for 20+ years. Most floors need to be sanded between 10 – 15 years. This is due to the client not doing the yearly maintenance, not having the maintenance done properly, and not cleaning the floor properly daily/weekly.
There are a couple of things we are trying to do by sanding your floor, we are trying to remove all the old finish, and we are trying to flatten your floor. We can only flatten a floor so much without removing too much “life” out of your floor. You should get between 3-5 sands in your hardwood floor, if you take too much wood off the top of the boards, you will get less.
On floors that are not flat, we often have to take more wood off in order to get all the finish in the “low” areas on the floor. Sanding a floor takes about 2+ weeks depending on the size of your gymnasium and the complexity of your game lines. We will come into your gym, remove the baseboards, tape off doors and remove thresholds. We will then sand the floor with our dual head Ryder Sander, going through the grits to cut through the old finish then bringing the floor back to a smooth surface.
Once the big sanders are done, we bring in the 3DS (3 disk Sander), to create a perfectly smooth floor with no sanding marks. When that is all done, we clean the floor of all the dust, and seal the hardwood with 2 coats of sealer. Once that is dry, we then use the 3DS again to sand off any wood hairs that stand up and remove any blemishes that the sealer might have created. At this point we tape out and paint game lines. We then pull tape and clean up any paint drops, spills, or bleeds.
After applying a top coat the floor once we then use the 3DS to lightly abrade the floor again. This again is another precaution to ensure that your floor has no remaining blemishes. We will clean the floor again, and then coat the floor 2 more times. Once the finish is dry enough to walk on, we will either install new baseboards or reinstall your old baseboards, thresholds, and remove all tape.
